When Positive Thinking Isn’t Helpful

When Positive Thinking Isn’t Helpful

"We've all got both LIGHT and DARK inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that's who we really are." - Sirius Black (Harry Potter)

“We’ve all got both LIGHT and DARK inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” – Sirius Black (Harry Potter)

“I try so hard to stay positive and be grateful, but I just keep falling into these despairing thoughts. I know this is why I keep getting sick.”

I recently heard this from someone I was working privately with and it really broke my heart. This is a woman who has worked for many years in therapy to overcome feelings of unworthiness and shame stemming from having been sexually abused as a child. She has made great strides, and has been exploring energy work as a way to continue and deepen her healing. Her journey has led her to many valuable teachings that have helped her to shift her thoughts towards the positive, and to manifest more love and beauty in her life.”

-I think this is a very pertinent idea and one that Cerridwen’s (http://journeyingtothegoddess.wordpress.com/2012/07/03/goddess-cerridwen/) story expresses well. When her plan to take control and inject something positive into an area of her life goes awry, what does she do? She doesn’t scream or despair or give up, she chases those reasons down-not to harm them, but to ingest them and rebirth them as something glorious.

Functioning Through Crisis Bindrune

This bindrune is to help people function normally and not drop their everyday lives or everyday tasks, even when they are going through a very intense time or suffering a kind of crisis.  It is therefore a temporary bindrune, but I have found it to be an effective and powerful one.

crisis bindrune

Ior: This rune of boundaries helps to hold the emotions or thoughts that are too intense inside, to embrace them in its circle so there will be a space, however small, outside of those thoughts where you will be able to move and act.  It will not help those who wish to avoid these deep things forever, but it will hold them back when you need to do things normally or simply require a break.

Stan: This rune helps to ground you in the moment, so that no matter what’s in the big picture, you will still have focus and time for what is right in front of you.  Additionally, by centering you and strengthening your foundations this rune will help maintain your overall strength and confidence in your ability to outlast whatever is wrong.

Othala: This rune pushes you to continue acting like yourself, in spite of any issues.  It tells you just exactly what you are capable of and reminds you that not everything is something  that you need to deal with.  Othala draws clear lines between what is yours to do now and what is not, making it easier to shed unnecessary burdens and concentrate on functioning.  Moreover, its lines create a secure space for you to work from, separating external energies or problems from piling onto your work and empowering you to take care of yourself and your things first.

Isa: This rune helps to stem the tide of a crisis by freezing peripheral, unneeded fears and problems that arise from it for you, leaving you free to delve down into the deepest places and deal with the core of the issue first.  In the moment, it helps you to step away from deep feelings and tend to immediate issues  for a time.

Tyr: This rune helps to keep you moving through life, to keep walking down your path even when you feel like there’s not one there or you’re not sure you can walk anymore.  This rune pushes you to continue to tend to the normal functions of life that need attention and reminds you that there will be a time later when you’ll want to find yourself upright so it’s good to remember how that feels every so often, even if you can’t stay up all the time.

Wunjo: Wunjo helps to herd sensations, allowing us to swing into joy for a little bit even when we’re overwhelmed with misery.  In this bindrune she helps us live normally for a moment by giving us back our full range of emotion rather than staying trapped in overriding ones we haven’t gotten through yet.

Laguz: The water rune helps our minds and energies flow forward, to the present task that needs doing, and to the future where things must have been done.  In order to function properly we need a decent amount of focus and thought to be untangled from deeper issues and clear for positive use.  Laguz sends us those energies when we need them and allows us to rejuvenate and rest in those newer present and forward-looking thoughts, so long as we don’t try to use those energies to avoid ever going back into deeper problems that need dealing with.

Tarot Deal Meditation Poem 2

When shuffling and dealing the tarot cards for myself I often find that I’m composing a poem in my head.  I find it a very grounding exercise and a soothing invitation to meditation and intuition:

One for the water that draws me here.

One for the earth that I hold dear.

One for the fires that refine fear.

One for the air whose winds must steer.

Tarot Deal Meditation Poem

When shuffling and dealing the tarot cards for myself I often find that I’m composing a poem in my head.  I find that it helps keep me grounded and focused, particularly when I’m about to do a reading that I’m anxious about.  It just really helps me to stay removed from my mundane thoughts about the question and slip into the meditative, intuitive side of my mind that can read the tarot spread without letting it get tangled up in my hopes and fears of what the spread will say.

Today’s tarot deal meditation poem ran thusly:

One for the ground that’s always around,

One for the air, that mysterious stair,

One for the water, as it whispers one another,

One for the fire as towards truth it spires,

And one for me upon this day-

Please bless my read of this array.

I also often find that the form my meditation poem took adds to the reading of the cards themselves.  That was the case today-my earth/pentacle card was a reminder that I already have all my resources.  My air/swords card spoke of inspiration and connection coming from my spiritual, higher sources.  My water/cups card spoke of a multitude of influences and directions.  My fire/wands card made clear a realization I had begun to suspect.  And the card representing me did indeed come as a token of blessing.

Does anyone else find that they use rhymes or other meditation techniques to aid with tarot reading for themselves without emotional tangles?
